Apprenticeships - Employer Commitment
An Apprentice is like any other employee; you take full responsibility for them in the workplace. You must:
- Employ the Apprentice in line with the National Apprenticeship Wage. For a 16-18 year old, and for a 19+ in the first year, this is £2.60 per hour. For existing employees and 19+ Apprentices after the first year, you should pay the National Minimum Wage. Many employers choose to pay more.
- Provide a contract of employment
- Comply with all usual employment legislation
- Provide a safe, healthy and supportive workplace
- Supervise, support and guide the Apprentice in the workplace
- Have current Employer’s and Public Liability Insurance
- Allow your Apprentice to attend College at least one day a week on full pay
When you take on an Apprentice we will complete with you:
- A health and safety check – this is a statutory requirement
- A College enrolment form
- A three way agreement outlining each party’s responsibilities
- An individual learning plan for the Apprentice
- A company induction
