PRESS STATEMENT - Following incident on College study trip to Weymouth
Shirley Arayan, Norton Radstock College Principal, said: "We can confirm three people were taken to hospital after a camping stove exploded while students were on a five day field trip in Weymouth.
The students, who were accompanied by staff, were completing a BTEC module for their Public Service course and were part of a 25-strong group.
The incident happened while they were preparing a meal at their campsite and two 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old girl suffered facial and arm injuries.
The emergency services were called and attended promptly and parents of all students on the trip have been notified. Two students remain in hospital at this time.
We are all quite shocked by what happened. The students had been fully trained and had been practising various skills for this trip at the College only last week.
However, at this time our priority are the students and we are liaising closely with the families of those injured in the incident to make sure they are supported and will be working with the authorities to find out exactly what happened."
